Belle of Georgia Peach is a classic Southern heirloom peach prized for its large, beautiful white-fleshed fruit, sweet flavor, and freestone pit. This old-fashioned peach has long been grown throughout the Southeast and remains a favorite for customers looking for a traditional white peach.

The fruit develops creamy-white flesh with a sweet, juicy flavor and attractive skin that may develop a red blush as it ripens. Belle of Georgia is a freestone peach, meaning the flesh separates readily from the pit when ripe. This makes it excellent for fresh eating as well as slicing, desserts, freezing, preserves, and other kitchen uses. UGA classifies Belle of Georgia as a white-fleshed freestone peach.

Belle of Georgia is generally considered a mid- to late-season peach. UGA lists its typical Georgia harvest period as approximately July 11–20, although harvest dates will vary with location, winter temperatures, spring weather, and the individual season.

North Florida Growing Note: Belle of Georgia has a relatively high chilling requirement of approximately 850 chill hours. UGA lists the cultivar at 850 hours, considerably higher than the low-chill peach varieties developed specifically for Florida.

Because winter chilling varies considerably from year to year in the Florida Panhandle, Belle of Georgia may not receive sufficient chilling every winter. Insufficient chilling can result in delayed or uneven leafing, flowering, and fruit production. UF/IFAS stresses the importance of matching a peach cultivar's chilling requirement to the location where it will be planted.

Local Growing Experience: We have received reports from growers in our North Florida area who have successfully grown and fruited Belle of Georgia. Because of that local experience, we offer it to customers who want to try this traditional Southern peach while making them aware that its high chilling requirement means production can vary from year to year.

For the best chance of success in North Florida, plant Belle of Georgia in full sun in well-drained soil and select a location that receives good winter chilling rather than an unusually warm protected microclimate.

Plant Details:

  • Flavor: Sweet, juicy, classic white-peach flavor
  • Stone Type: Freestone
  • Pollination: Self-fertile
  • Best Uses: Fresh eating, slicing, desserts, freezing, preserves, baking, and home processing
  • Soil: Fertile, well-drained soil; peaches do not perform well in persistently wet soil
  • Water: Regular watering while establishing and consistent moisture during fruit development without waterlogging the root zone
  • Landscape Uses: Home orchard, edible landscape, traditional Southern fruit garden, and specialty peach collection

Pollination: Belle of Georgia Peach is self-fertile, so a single tree is capable of producing fruit without another peach variety nearby. Peaches have flowers containing both male and female reproductive parts and generally do not require a second cultivar for fruit set.

Best Pollinator Partners: None required. Belle of Georgia can produce fruit by itself. Customers may plant another peach variety nearby to increase the diversity of their orchard and extend the harvest season, but a second peach should not be sold as necessary for Belle of Georgia to bear fruit.

North Florida Recommendation: Belle of Georgia is not a low-chill Florida peach. Its approximately 850-hour chilling requirement is significantly higher than the chilling requirements of peaches specifically bred for Florida. However, because Belle of Georgia has been successfully grown by local growers in our area, customers who understand the possibility of variable production may wish to grow this traditional Southern variety.
